On June 26, 2025, the United Methodist Church of Burundi inaugurated a new borehole system installed in Muyange local church, Bujumbura District in Buganda Commune. It is enabled by funding from UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) and GBGM (General Board of Global Ministries) to address the urgent need for clean drinking water in Bumbiri II, a locality severely affected by the 2023 floods that destroyed existing infrastructure.
The borehole with a capacity of over 10,800 liters per day serves approximately 4,000 people. It has significantly improved access to potable water, reducing the distance from 8 kilometers to just 50 meters for many households. Women and girls, who previously spent up to 8 hours collecting water, can now focus on their development projects and other household duties.
Reverend Cimpaye Valentine, Bujumbura District Superintendent, emphasized that the project aims to reduce waterborne diseases and promote hygiene. “This borehole is more than just infrastructure—it is a life-saving resource and a symbol of compassion,” she said.
Locals express deep gratitude. Nishimwe Roda said: “We no longer fetch water from the river, which often made us sick. This clean water has changed our lives.”
Reverend Onésime, senior pastor of Muyange local church, reported an increase in church membership since the installation, reflecting the project’s positive impact on the community.

Beyond health benefits, the borehole has stimulated local development by enabling irrigation and freeing up time for other productive activities. Pierre Nzohabonimana, a village leader, affirmed the local administration’s commitment to safeguarding this vital resource.
On behalf of UMCOR and GBGM, Missionary Patrick Abro reminded the community that the borehole is a gift of Christian hospitality saying “Water is life.” “May all who use it do so with respect, unity, and love,” he added.
